Whimsical Design

In Architecture, DIY Project, Interior Design, Out Buildings, Residential Homes on September 19, 2012 at 8:50 pm

I recently had someone tell me they were looking for a “touch of whimsy” in their design.  The request got me wondering how that could be accomplished without crossing the line into kitsch. So as any good designer would, I embarked on a case study journey. Well, OK, so all did was search the internet.  As expected, I had to wade through a deluge of pictures to find a few ideas that had a flair of whimsical fancy, yet given the right context, didn’t seem to cross the line.

10 Window Seat Ideas

In Interior Design on January 13, 2012 at 3:23 am

Adding a cozy window seat is a great way to personalize your home.  I recently came across this website with 36 window seat ideas.  Here are my top 10 favorites.

I love these furniture pieces by IZM.  In their own words, the pieces are “clean designs that appear rustic but are sophisticated in construction. They often cast an imposing shadow but remain delicate through studied variation in material thickness, cantilevered construction, recesses, and just-right proportionality.”  As far as I’m concerned, enough said!  Enjoy the pictures and check out their other pieces.

Screen Partitions

In Interior Design on September 30, 2011 at 2:21 am

I came across these screen partitions by lzf while searching for a bendable plywood product for a project I am working on at home.

Whats particularly interesting about these particular room dividers is that depending on placement with-in a room, the effect on the room’s character alters significantly.  When placed near a window, the screen tempers the light in the space creating layers of shadow and light.  When used in the middle of a room, it not only layers the visual perspective of the space, but also adds warmth through the hues of its natural material.
